Selecting Your Subjects

We understand that going completely online with your child’s learning can be daunting, to say the least. Why don’t you put us to the test to see just how excellent our programme is?

You can either go all-in right from the outset or start a bit smaller, with the challenging subjects to support your child while they are still in a traditional school. Choose two or more subjects for a trial run.

Whichever choice you make, you can trust Woodridge Connect to give your child the experience of a lifetime, in an environment designed to help them flourish.

Summary of the Different Academic Subjects

English Home Language
Afrikaans First Additional Language Option
isiXhosa First Additional Language Option

English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa help in developing and applying language skills and are essential for enabling students to communicate in our multicultural society. Students can choose between two additional first language options – Afrikaans or isiXhosa.

Mathematics

Mathematics is the abstract study of topics, such as quantity (numbers), structure, space, and change. Mathematics develops analytical and problem-solving skills, enhances general understanding and unpacking of concepts in other subjects, and sets learners up for study in the fields of Business and the Sciences.

Life Orientation

Life Orientation is central to the holistic development of learners. It addresses skills, knowledge, and values for learners’ personal, social, intellectual, emotional, and physical growth and is concerned with interrelating these facets. This sets learners up to be well-rounded, self aware, balanced individuals with a clear sense of identity and purpose.

Social Science

Social Sciences, which include History and Geography, are the study of human society and social relationships with each other and the environment. Understanding History helps students make informed decisions about the future, while Geography encourages good custodianship of our world.

Economic Business Studies and Accounting

Economic Business Studies and Accounting, which includes financial literacy and entrepreneurship, covers a range of topics designed to give students a general understanding of the various elements of running an effective, successful business. This sets them up to be financially stable and independent.

Natural Science

Natural Sciences cover the universe and the rules of nature, the interdependence between plant life and the environment, earth and the solar system, matter and material, chemical reactions, and different forms of energy. This fosters technological literacy, environmental awareness, critical thinking and problem solving.

Creative Arts

In Creative Arts, learners are exposed to dance, drama, music and visual arts. All aspects include both practical application and theoretical understanding. The purpose of this subject is to encourage lateral thinking and self-expression, and develop learners as creative, imaginative individuals with an appreciation of the arts and other cultures.

Technology

Technology education is the study of the processes and knowledge related to technology. It covers humans’ ability to shape and change the physical world to meet needs. Students develop skills in assessing the impacts of products and systems, researching, problem-solving, and developing an attitude of safety while working collaboratively with others.

IT & Robotics

IT and Robotics includes, but is not limited to, computer science, coding, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and electronic engineering. Students learn how to programme, design, and make their own robots, giving them the opportunity to learn STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) concepts in a hands-on environment.

Entrepreneurship

Help your child create their own business opportunities by unlocking their entrepreneurial mindset. Entrepreneurial skills are particularly important in a country with untapped potential and employment challenges. From ideation to business plans, and everything in between, we prepare students to think with a business mind and see opportunities everywhere.

Managing your money

Financial literacy is one of the most significant collective contributors to our economy. The earlier we can teach our children the basics of budgeting, saving, and investing, and even submitting their tax returns, the better. Financial skills are not a luxury but a necessity. With Financial Literacy, we can enable financial independence and stability for future generations.

Music

It is said that music is the literature of the heart; it commences where speech ends. The Woodridge College Music Department joins forces with Woodridge Connect to deliver an excellent, high-standard offering. Whether you’re into drums, cello or saxophone, jazz, music technology, or any other musical instruments, there’s an instructor for you.

Wildlife Awareness Programmes

We all play a role in the sustainability of our world. Our children often feel this call more strongly than ever. With our carefully crafted wildlife awareness programmes, we help them understand more about the world around them and cultivate an awareness that encourages them to be caring custodians of their immediate environment and the broader living world.

Outdoor Education @ Woodridge Campus

Experience the culture of Woodridge College at its one-of-a-kind self-sustaining campus. For an adventure they’ll never forget, learners can spend a week on-site, exploring the world through kayaking, horse-riding, mountain biking, and other activities. Aside from the fun aspect, learners will also benefit from the social interaction with peers of various ages groups and backgrounds.

Career-based learning

Making career decisions based on one day of job shadowing will never be enough. Instead, your child can go on a journey of discovery through our career-based learning programme, where they experience the world of work from different perspectives. This is ideally suited to Grade 9 students, empowering them to make informed subject choices for Grade 10.

Career guidance in Grade 9

Choosing a career is a big decision, one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. With so many new job titles and qualifications out there, it’s hard to know the best option for your child’s unique goals and needs. Career guidance provides access to experts who can guide your child through the tricky waters of making subject choices based on their interests and career options.

Cricket / Soccer / Hockey

Have a ball with training programmes that cater for all stages, from beginner to advanced. Get access to personalised coaching and feedback through our live sessions, and submit your assignments during the year. A focus on technical skills, conditioning drills, and more, will maximize your potential as you progress throughout your school career.

Martial Arts

Martial arts encourage self-discipline and increase focus, balance and stamina. Starting with the basics of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (a mostly ground-based martial art that aims to achieve a non-violent submission of one’s opponent), you will learn self-defense in the comfort of your own home. Come alone or find a partner and put these techniques into action.

Chess

Learning and playing chess can improve your brain function and memory and increase your cognitive and strategic thinking abilities. Play against your peers, practice against the computer, and join in with virtual sessions where you and fellow participants can show off your skills, and unpack some of those strategic moves you’ve been dying to know.

Pilates

Ensure good posture and better stability without breaking a sweat (well, most of the time!). Our Pilates programme offers convenient, easy-to-squeeze-in workouts that will strengthen your core, stretch out tension, and boost your mood. Regular check-ins with virtual sessions will keep you on track and motivated, ensure good form, and prevent injuries and strain.

Yoga

Find your Zen with an ancient practice that connects mind and body, lengthens muscles, improves mood and focus, and increases strength and balance. Our virtual Yoga programme includes a combination of self-paced training sessions and group sessions, where you will get personalised feedback on your technique and form.

Running

Whether you’re infamous for chilling on the couch but want to run 5km, want to learn more about running techniques, or run cross country, our running programme will help you on your way. Step outside, breathe in some fresh air, and get that heart rate up! Who knows, you might just find some cool friends in your area that you can train with.

Dancing

Shake your tail feathers and let off some steam with a bit of fancy footwork. From Ballroom to Latin Dancing, solo or with a partner, you can find your groove with a range of fun, easy-to-follow virtual dance sessions. Besides being a great workout, dancing has physical and mental health benefits, can enhance your social life and self-confidence and reduces stress.

* This is a growing list based on the interest of the students. Should you have an interest in sports other than the above, we would be happy to consider your requests.
